Our very own CEO, Tom Cox, recently caught up with the Nashville Business Journal about the changing landscape of consumer-driven healthcare. In this conversation, Cox called out millennials as one of the main forces shaping the technological innovation and progress we’ve seen in the industry thus far.Roughly defined as the generation born between 1980 and 1995, millennials make up approximately 25 percent of the U.S. population, and are frequently the subjects of news analysis and public discussion. Labeled by some as “digital natives,” this generation relies on and expects technology to enhance every aspect of their lives, including the healthcare experience.
Stakeholders across the industry recognize this paradigm shift and are hard at work to meet these demands by developing and providing more intuitive technological systems and solutions. Doing so not only fosters further advancement of technology within the industry, but improves patient satisfaction, patient engagement, care outcomes, and much, much more. In fact, a lot of our own progress at MyHealthDirect with online scheduling is directly connected to the rising voice of millennial patients. For a population that facilitates almost every interaction on a smartphone, it’s becoming an expectation to be able to schedule an appointment with their primary care physician from any device?Cox said himself that “millennials are going to change for the better the way healthcare is delivered and consumed,” and that couldn’t be truer. Everyone in the healthcare industry would be wise to keep an eye on this powerful generation and take their cues for what technology is needed when, where, and how.
